I asked Dot how Sugar Daddy was able to order his car 7 months after Ylo Brd and still get his made first. Her answer was interesting: (Thanks Dot!)

It was called the allocation system. Each dealer was given a certain number of T-birds that they could order. Many dealers were able to only get one for the entire 2002 model year (until Ford decided that they were going to build more than 25,000), other dealers, 2, 3, or 4 or more. There are between 4,000 and 5,000 dealers(including Canada). Every dealer got 1 T-bird before a dealer could get their 2nd T-bird.

A dealer's allocation was spread through out the year. The 1st round of allocations meant 1 to a dealer, the 2nd round went back thru the dealer list but this time without those dealers that were getting only 1 or 2 - which meant some dealers with high allocations could get more than 1 during the 2nd round. A dealer getting only 2 would not get their 2nd one until half the T-birds had been shipped out which meant their 2nd one didn't come until March or April. Meanwhile, dealers with 15 or 20 or 30 or more allocations, could get 1 or 2 during the 2nd round thru the dealer list. A dealer with 4 allocations would get 1 every 3 months.

Example, my dealer was allocated 22 initially (picked up 3 more by March 2001) - 1st one came mid-October, 2nd one came early January, one came late January - the rest came at the rate of 2 to 3 per month. All his orders for the 25 were placed by end of March 2001.

Which means a dealer really could wait to place their orders as long as they placed it before that particular part of their allocation went thru. It looks like Sugar Daddy's car was that particular dealer's 2nd car that he was allocated and that dealer was middle of the list on the allocation system - and must have understood the allocation system (most didn't so most were ordered by June 2001). The first round of cars were to the dealers by mid November 2001 according to the VIN #s that had been shipped out by then.

I don't think you're going to find very many cars that were ordered that "late" by a dealer during 2001. Sugar Daddy must have searched to find a dealer that still had an order to place or happened to be lucky to live near such a dealer.

Ylo Brd's order was placed the first day that orders were accepted but her dealer probably had a large allocation and a number of people on her dealer's door step waiting to make their order that day.

Thanks Quickdraw. Does your information provide the name of the dealer? Although I bought from a dealer, it was quite some time after the build date, it was not the dealer who originally ordered it and I am curious what route it took before it came to me with a few miles on it. Thanks for any additional data that is available.

Thanks for all the information, I especially found the allocation information interesting. Dot was correct, my car was 6 of 11 allocated to my dealer and my order was placed the first day they were being accepted by Fords system.
