  • Re: Where are the cashmeres?

So it seems that the Neiman-Marcus was the only 'feature' car that didn't have number plaques. You'd think that with only 200 built, they would have them. Maybe the idea of number plaques didn't occur to Ford until the 2003 007 edition. Or is it possible that NM didn't want them numbered?

Phil, Stanley Marcus ALWAYS catered to exclusivity so the idea of numbering cars would be natural for NM. The phrases "Exclusively Ours" and "Ours and ours alone" filled NM catalogs. As a guy who for decades bought suits from Jack Steel in the downtown Dallas store, I am familiar with NM marketing.

Thanks Newman. Yes, Neiman-Marcus is well known for the exclusive nature of their products and high prices, and I'm sure the suits you bought were no exception.

I guess if the NM Thunderbirds had included number plaques they might have been even more collectible, at least certain numbers (first, last, etc.). Based on what I've read here though, the plaques may not have indicated actual build sequence. Mine is 127 of 200 based on the digits in the VIN.

Ford had number plaques back in 1963 for the Principality Birds and again in 1965 with the 10th anniversary Special Edition Birds . So, nothing new and all built in Wixom.

ps. Picture of plaque on '63 Principality Bird. May be wrong on the '65 as only plates were given out to have owner name engraved in them.

Thanks for that info Martin. What I meant was that maybe Ford hadn't considered number plaques for the Retros until the 2003 model. I didn't realize that some previous generations also had them.

But the Neiman Marcus cars were the only ones with consecutive VIN's, so they are numbered. This really worked better than the plaque method, since the plaques and the VIN's got shuffled in production.

Thanks for that Ron. I think the NMs were the first of the Retros produced, is that right?

As part of my 'Manage the Wait' set I did get a form to request a personalized name plate but I never mailed it in. Wish I had.

I feel very fortunate to have been one of the 200 that was able to buy one new.

100026-100225, yes they were some of the first built. Are there more than three of them here on TBN?

Thanks for posting that link Rusty. Appears that at least a couple aren't listed on the registry yet, mine among them.

It's been mentioned before but there are other NM's belonging to TBN members that are not on our registry. NMTbirdLA for one, also 1 in Colorado though I think he sold his a couple of years ago so don't know where it went.

I should have said, are there more than three that post here, and since we have added another here in East Tennessee, that would make four that I see posting.

Just checked with the Colorado NM and he still has his.
