  • Tilt wheel quit going in and out.

Anyone have any advise. My tilt wheel still goes up and down, but no longer goes in, but will extend out.

When you put the key in wheel automatically goes down, and when you remove key wheel goes up.

Figure it is either bad switch on side of steering wheel, or internal issues.

    For a 2002 T Bird.

How strong is your battery? A weak battery can cause lots of strange problems with these cars.

I had something like this on the PCR, turned out to be one of the small motors that does the tilting was shot.

I agree with Ron. It is one of the motors.

Battery is good, only 4 months old.

one thing, when you move the switch you hear a relay close to operate the
motors. When you move the switch to move the steering wheel in, nothing.

figure either a bad switch, or possibly a bad limit switch.

either way guess I am going to have to get into the steering column.

Long shot. there are relays in the trunk. i think Mike told me four of them. they are black boxes and are interchangeable plug and play. Try rotating them they are in the spare tire cavity on the upper right side

I am experiencing a similar problem. It's both the up/down and in/out that work intermittently. When I can get the "in" to work it seems to move too far, i.e. it turns on the high beam lights because is it pushing in the stalk. When playing with it sometimes it works ok, so I finally got the wheel where I wanted it and removed the fuse in the passenger compartment so the wheel doesn't move at all now. It's a fix, but not the desired remedy.

                Any thoughts?

Which fuse? I have been thinking about eliminating the auto up down tilt for years. A TBN Ford mechanic told me it can be done by reprogramming.

All I want is, steering wheel all out and up so I can get in and out of the car. Right now, before shutting engine off, I have to hold (wear out) the switch in order to defeat the auto retract/tilt. The whole Tbird was set up for little persons or ladies.

Please give fuse number or location. It will be appreciated.

HKS, the fuse is #19, 15amp and is located by the passenger right foot. My car is a very late production 2005 (Inca Gold) and you should check your owners manual to confirm that your car is similar to mine. It is on page 156 of my owners manual, described as "tilt/tele motors". When you stick your head down in the area you will see an oval plastic cover on the right panel, up high. Remove it and there is another "snap in" Black cover with the location the fuses on a black sticker. I don't see any description sticker anywhere down there which describes what fuse controls what circuit. That information I located in the owners manual. Again, this doesn't "fix" anything, but it does eliminate the the uncertainty of where the wheel will go.

                      Hope this helps you.
                      Ken

I found the problem, and repaired. Steering wheel goes in and out, and up and down like new.

the position sensor for the in and out function came out of the holder. I pulled the complete steering
columb, disassembled fixed the position sensor, reinstalled in car, good as new.

                          edward301......Sounds complicated, was it?
Is there a "step by step" guide anywhere that you are aware of?
                          Thanks

Here you go, Ken, welcome to TBN.

Sorry, I can't get to any way to edit this, and it refuses to show the PDF's for editing, so you'll have to take my word that I copied the pages from the TBird manual. If the admin will erase this mess, I'll try again.
