  • Car cruisin' music

When the words to 'Hot Rod Lincoln' were posted today on the site it got me thinking about a play list of great car songs. I went through my I-Tunes play list and came up with a starter list of 25 songs. They either have to be written about cars or have some kind of mention of a car or driving in the lyrics.

Here are my 25.... I encourage you to disagree but better yet, add some to the list so I can broaden out my I-Tunes library.

    Bronzebird

    409 Beach Boys
The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena) Jan & Dean
    Fun, Fun, Fun Beach Boys
    Little GTO Ronnie & Daytonas

Rick -- You should definitely add these to your list:

    Mabeline -- Chuck Berry
Thunder Road -- Robert Mitchem or Jim & Jesse
Silver Thunderbird -- Marc Cohn or Jodee Messina
One Piece at a Time -- Johnny Cash
The Speedway at Nazareth -- Mark Knoppler
Five-O Ford -- Reverend Horton Heat
Suicide Doors -- Reverend Horton Heat
Hot Rod Race -- Jimmie Dolan

I'll have to give it some more thought but these came to mind right away.

Surf music would be perfect; some of the recent incarnations of surf:

      The Eliminators
      The Torquays
      The Penetrators
      The Aqua Velvets
      The Blue Hawaiians
      The Vara Tones
      The Mermen
      The Vanduras
      Slack Tone
      Daikaiju

In no particular order... these bands deliver.

This is dumb. Three discs in the changer is the Beach Boys. I'm looking for Jan and Dean as albums or tapes to burn. Borla exhaust went on today.

I like any car songs from the 60's and some surfing music. Actually, pretty much any 60's music will do. It brings me back to when times were simpler and hot rods ruled the streets. Every kid growing up back then could tell you the specs on any car. Good old Revere Beach Parkway, Richard's Diner and the Big S. Things change and I'm a hell of lot older now, but one thing hasn't changed...I'll still give you a great run at a set of lights and most likely beat your harse too!

For those who remember Arnie 'WooWoo' Ginsberg:

"As Ginsburg reached retirement age, he migrated north to Ogunquit, Maine (about 75 miles north of Boston). He had spent summers there in his younger years, and had developed a hometown affinity for this artists' colony and resort on the coast of southern Maine. Ogunquit residents came to recognize Ginsburg when he rode his moped into town during the warmer months, and in time he became a fixture in the community. He now lives in a small house near Perkins Cove, a small and picturesque area visited by many tourists throughout the year"

By the way, if you are ever in Perkins Cove, Maine, you can pick the 'Lobsta' of your choice, from their tank and they'll cook it for you, at Barnacle Billy's

Wow! That brought back memories. Woo woo always advertised the Adventure Car Hop in Saugus. I think he had a piece of it as well. I actually did go there on occasion since I lived in Revere at the time. I can remember being at the beach and listening to WMEX, which was tuned in on everybodies radios.

I've been to Perkin's Cove many times and is one of my favorite places. When I visit my daughter in MA each year, Ogunquit is one of my pilgrimages. Another one is Woodman's in Essex. Woodman's claims to be the inventor of the "fried clam."

I'm always the last one to know, so I thought I'd post a CD I found recently to add to our Thunderbird Music Collection. It's the Thunderbird 50th Anniversary Collection, by EMI with 16 cross-section songs of the early 60s --
                            Fun, Fun, Fun, (of course)
                            The Wanderer
                            Travelin' Man
                            Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran's original)
Surfin' Bird (the main reason I got it)
                            etc.

They're available at Walmart, Borders, Amazon, etc. for around $12.00.
                            Great fun.
