Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
With all due respect, loss of hearing and the possibilty of contracting tinnitus (ear ringing usually from loud noise) is not a laughing matter.
Most everyone gets a ringing in the ears from time to time, but imagine a loud, constant screeching in your head 24/7 with no escape.
I live with it everyday, and there's no known cure.

Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
I actually went to my Dr. yesterday for a hearing test. He said my left ear had more of a hearing loss then the right. He asked me "Did you drive a lot with the window down." Well, Duh!
Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
The hearing fine, but the hair loss from the wind blowing is a different story, I know it must be the wind and not getting older. cause the wife is always telling me to grow up

Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
I don't think Retro Bird owners have to worry all that much.
According to "Consumer Guide Automotive" review and their "expert ratings summery" they said
"A cozy coupe with hardtop in place, and among the quieter convertibles with soft top up or down. Relatively minor wind buffeting top down. Road noise, exhaust note appropriately subdued. Convertible top nicely lined and insulated."
Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
I have had ringing in the ears for over 25 years and when around loud noises
the ringing level goes up and at night when all is quiet and trying to sleep
is the worst of time having it.
During day time with all noise around you pay little attention to it.
I have had motorcycles my whole life time of driving of 40+ years..
Believe mine was caused by sinus infection..
But it is not fun to have ringing in the ears...

Unless you experience it first hand, no one knows what it's like to have constant ear screeching/ringing.
You and I (and 50 million others) do.
Hang in there.

Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
Why is it that anything I enjoy is now illegal, immoral, fatteneing, cancer causing, amongst other things, now hearing loss.
I think I will give up reading and enjoy life in the TBird.
Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
You do not give up anything..
My ringing has not taken anything I do away other than at times
more now that I am older hearing people talk.
If on the phone I miss a lot of conservation or in a room full of
people I can not hear what a lot of conversation is going on
if you are not directly in front of me..
And today maybe its a good thing of both above..Just jokin
TV I am constantly asking my wife what did they say..
I still ride the motorcycles and the T Bird with the top down
is the only time I drive the T Bird ever..
If the top is not down the T Bird stays in garage..
The motorcycles I now have windshields and the best helmets
to protect my hearing..
I have found that T Bird really does not have that much wind
noise at lower speeds which is were I drive it mostly on backroads.
The other day in Mini with sunroof open my wife said do you hear the
whistling noise that bothered her and I did not..
So I slowed down some to not affect her with it..
If it gets to bad I always have ear plugs that I use for the very few
concerts I have been to or the dirt track races I wear them..
Just trying to protect what I have left to get me through the years
I do have left to hear some..
If I am around loud nosies the ringing gets louder and sometimes
takes days to lower to to level I am used to in my ears.
I will say this to you who do not have tinnius ( ringing in ear ) if levels
of noise bother you ever than is the time to protect what you have.
Once you get the ringing you will wish you do not take the opportunity
to protect the hearing you had..
My thoughs on this matter..Joe.. Enjoy the time to ride winter is
around the corner..
Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
After two years with serious tinnitus, I'm finally starting to get back to normal. Screeching is still there, but I just accept it. Still battling depression.
I've learned to carry earplugs around, just as I do with my wallet.
Showed my Galaxie at a local car show today. (I think my car was invisible; very few lookers, but the musclecars got plenty of attention.)
Glad I brought my earplugs, because the DJ's music was ear-boggling.
TBird03Joe is right. Be careful, because once you contract tinnitus, it's too late to do anything about it, and I never had a problem until I was 57 years old in 2000. It got very bad on 2007.
(Sorry to preach so much, but I just wish someone had preached to me.)

Re: Men, convertible drivers at higher risk for hearing loss
TBIRD03JOE said alot about how you suffer with a hearing loss.I also have tinnitus after 40+ yrs as an Ironworker. In my time there was no such thing as ear protection.Everyday you go home and your ears are ringing ,than one morning the ringing is still there. With the ringing by the time you understand a word the person is saying there on the next word ,so you are always trying to figure our the word. At times it sound like people are speaking in a foreign language .I just bought hearing aids and they help some ,the good part when in the Bird top down I shut them off as the wind noise is a pain and they do make me feel older.
