  • Mechanic in Austin, Texas?

My airbag light has come on.

I have just searched the forum. This tells me that either some wires are loose under either my driver's or passenger seat, or something called a clockspring has gone awry. I do not work on cars. At all. I almost killed myself trying to replace the taillight (those little plastic tabs holding the trunk lining in place don't "pop out" when you pull on them - they break - and how on Earth are you supposed to get the nut off of that 10-inch bolt without impaling your forearm?).

So, I have questions. Are these wires/contacts under the seats easily accessible? If not, or if that isn't the problem, does anyone take their Thunderbird to someone they trust in Austin? My problem developed remarkably soon after an inspection and rear brake job . . .

Also, I have the squeaking steering column. Not when I turn the wheel, only when it moves automatically when you put the key in the ignition or remove it. I have read instructions on accessing the steering column and greasing it. If I try this, the next step will be to call the towing company to come get the car. Any other suggestions/possibilities?

    Dan's Auto Repairs
    2817 Lyle Rd
del Valle , TX 78617 Map

    512-385-8283.

I stumbled across Dan about 10 years ago. Honest, exremely knowledgeable, etc. Does mechanical and body work.

His shop is near airport, and it is a bit of a hole-in-the wall; but he is great. He fixes my kid's car, and then I give him a check or my visa.

This is what he has done for me:

Car got tagged; he "untagged it." Almost as good as new.
Fixed 4 or 5 family member cars after accidents.
    Changed oil on several cars.
    Minor suspension work.
Battery exploded; he cleaned up car and replaced batt.
Re-charged AC on late model Caddy.
    Replaced motor mounts.

He is just a good man.

If you like, you can tell him Ed (from San Antonio) sent you.

Try looking under the driver's set. You will find the plugs. Unplug them clean the contacts and plug them back in. That was the problem with my airbag light and also a few other's problems.

It could be the clock spring, but it is much easier and cheaper to try the connectors first.

Can anyone tell me which plug I should be concerned with? The gray one came off easily. The yellow one I cannot figure out how to disconnect . . .
