  • Would you buy a Ford Savile?

Catching up on my Thunderbird reading. Apparently, that was the name that was reluctantly heading into production for Ford's new car. Luckily Alden Giberson came up with Thunderbird at the last minute. Other names that were proposed - - -
    • Panther
    • Coronado
    • Baracuda
    • Fordster
    • Ty-Coon
    • Boomerang
    • Glidester
    • Escort,
    • Hep Cat
    • Wheelaway
    • Swiftster
    • Beaver
    • El Tigre
    • Challenger
    • Roadocrat
    • Phantom
    • Cobra
    • Whizzer
    • Rapier
    • Interceptor
    • Bearcat
    • Canalier
    • Wombat
    • Road Runner
    • Detroiter
    • Fordette
    • Runabout

Some of those are still familiar, most are best forgotten. It's hard to imagine the Thunderbird as anything else, but how would you feel about driving a retro Beaver? We all need to send Alden a thank you note.

Sealy == That would have been so wrong and funny if Ford had named the car the Beaver. I can hear it now:

Lady takes her car to the shop and tells the mechanic "My Beaver is making a funny noise."
Lady tells the bag boy at the grocery store "Just put that salami in my Beaver."
Guy tells his buddies "I got the badest Beaver you ever seen."

June Cleaver tells her husband in a episode of Leave It To Beaver. "Ward, don't you think you were a little rough on the Beaver last night?"

Now if Ford had gone with the name Hep Cat -- That's a name that would have sold dozens and dozens of cars.

Actually, there were multitudes of variations on this line during the show's run. Beaver was always in trouble, and Ward was always a little hard on the "Beaver". LOLOLOL

Soooo glad they didn't name it THAT!

I'd take the Tbird out for a ride, but 30.1 inches of snow fell Saturday... and we are still digging out from Snowpocolyps.

Yeah, yeah. 30.1 inches is more than your Beaver can handle.
(I actually did not expect this to go this far down hill so rapidly.)

So I can only guess that Dave's Beaver is up to its axel in snow!

Sure wouldn't want a frost bit Beaver now would you?

Up here in Canada where we haven't had a lot of snow this year and dispite the extreme cold, we are encouraging out Beavers to get out in the sun for a few minutes every day.

I think we should take up a collection to buy sun lamps for those southern Beavers.

          Poor lil thangs!

Drive it like you stole it !!!

Reminds me of a story my friend Rick who is a service writer at a local Ford dealership told me.

He has a regular customer who brings her Taurus for service. Her name is Anita Mann.

Well, one day she had wondered off from the customer waiting area to the showroom. He paged her to tell her her car was ready.

"I-Needa Man" "I-Needa Man", to the service desk ..."

He said the guys in the shop were just hollering ....

Not sure if anyone remembers the first cobled up '55 sports package (with the upcoming t'bird in mind was called the "Burnetti". Good thing that name didn't stick either.

There is a little town in Boone Co. WV called UNEEDA.
The town has a sense of humor. Everything is named Uneeda... such as:
                    Uneeda Post Office
                    Uneeda General Store
                    Uneeda Furniture
                    etc....
                    What were we talking about?

Which brings to mind this question. Ford is known for it's brand logos such as the Mustang galoping pony and our beloved spread winged Thunderbird. What do you think they would have used as a logo for the Hep Cat or some of the other names considered? I can see a logo of a dude decked out in a zoot suit. wide brimmed hat, and a long gold watch chain gracing the fender.

What would be the logo for say the TyCoon? Maybe the characture of the little man in the Monopoly game?

                      What about the Detroitier?

What about the Detroitier? (A mugger wearing a ski mask)

                        Well you asked!

Shame on you Gord. But with the current state of the economy there are not many positive images of Detroit that come readily to mind. With apologies to my friends in Detroit I was thinking more like a "Rust Belt" around the car.
