  • hubcaps and wheel locks

I'm planning a trip down rout 66 and back by way of the Lincoln highway. What is the risks of loosing my hubcaps or wheels to thieves on a trip like that?

    Ed,

I took a trip from Chicago to LA and back in 2002 with my 1964 Thunderbird and had no issues.

I always parked in a well lighted area and where possible in front of the front doors of the hotel and tipped the night staff to keep an eye on the car.

Most, refused the tip they were just happy to have a cool car to look at all night and most said to leave it right under the canopy under the lights.

If that is not a possibility then you can endeavor to get a ground floor room and park your car under the window or at the very least if you have to have a room at the rear of the hotel on an upper floor, park the car under a light where you can see it and check on it over night.

I guess I was just a little paranoid it was the first time I had travelled such long distances with the car.

Just relax and enjoy the trip would be my best advice.

    Gord

BTW your car has cast wheels and probably has locking wheel nuts, while not totally theft proof it is a deterant.

You could try wheel locks. Won't stpo any real thieves, but will discourage kids.

We travel extensively with our Bird. Many trips between home & San Diego, CA. We have had absolutely no problems.

Best advice I can offer is to just have a real good time and not to worry.

I know it is your pampered 'baby" BUT it is still just a car with car insurance so enjoy it. That's why you bought it.

Only some 2002's came with locking wheel nuts. 2003-2005 did not. I have never had any problems on road trips with my birds. Don't stay in a bad part of town and take precautions as others have suggested. Don't worry, enjoy the trip.

The risk of losing the whole car is much greater than the risk of losing the wheels or hubcaps. The wheels are nothing special and will not fit many cars!
