Re: Are extended Warranty's worth expence?

I'm not trying to insult anyone, but it is the job of a Ford representative to sell things that will add to the dealership's bottom line. (I would certainly do the same if I were in that position.)

There have been times when I've had to raise my voice to get Ford dealer reps to stop pushing various "stuff" on me.

Yes, it's a crap shoot, but I just wish I could sleep better based on confidence in Ford's, or any manufacturer's, quality, workmanship, and design rather than their extended coverage plan.

Re: Are extended Warranty's worth expence?

Mine certainly was! Purchased my 03 new with a 6 yr extended warranty. One month after the warranty ran out the thermostat had to be replaced at a cost of $600.

I researched the extended warranty on TBN and found that IMARTUN had sold warranties to several members. I purchased the $1250 3yr, 36,000 warranty.

On 06-28-10 I took the bird in because the driver's side window quit, there was a rattle in the back end and some strange humming noise upon acceleration (40,000 mi.). It took until 07-29 to get the parts for that humming. Differential - on national backorder. Approx. $1,000 in parts so far (bad bearing received, must order another one). Sway bars and something to do with a bracket that holds up the window motor. I had a rental for 10 days under the warranty. The parts and the rental car made the warranty a wash. Who knows how much the labor total will be. I am breathing easy because I know all of it will only cost me the $100 deductible.

I agree regarding the Ford extended warranty, if the price is less than $800 and covers 6 years and up to 75,000 miles as mine did. If the dealer wanted $2000 I would have walked away. I too had an otherwise expensive A/C problem where the parts alone exceeded the cost of the warranty, just paid the $100 deductible.

My warranty was probably less expensive because my car was 1 year old and still had 2 years and/or 26,000 miles of new car warranty when I bought it.

I've been pondering this since I bought my Bird two months ago. For some reason, here in Florida the price of Ford's extended warranty is exorbitant - some $2400 (plus $125 inspection) for the best plan. I don't have the bucks for that right now, having exhausted my discretionary $ for the down payment and the really neat wheels along with a few other minor mods. I'm not one who believes in add-on warranties, but some of the scare stories here have me worried.

Ted, shop the warranty at another dealer. These guys will rake you over the coal at any opportunity. Somebody will do you right.

Absolutely. But I shopped Fordwarrantys.com. TBN's own guru, Lou, did the same research, and found the same price for Florida. I will check my local Ford and Lincoln stores, but I don't anticipate any better deals.

When the factory warranty was about to run out I got an ESP extended warranty from King Ford in Lanett AL. I have used it twice once to fix the AC valve that controls the dual climate on each side and then the rack and pinion. Each cost me $100. The warranty paid for itself with what it saved.

I'll be in office until Tuesday this week and then gone for 7-10 days. My office number is 630-925-7590.

One note of caution: Flordia is the ONLY state in Amercia where you have to pay full retail for the ESP if you buy it in FL. Of course you might buy your ESP plan out-of-state through the Internet.

                    Call me with any questions.

                      Hi Lou,

Who controls the pricing in Florida, the factory the dealers or the state? My daughter and I are both happy with the purchase we made from you. Too bad it's not available any more.

Re: Are extended Warranty's worth expence?

So, Lou, overall, do you make or lose money on extended warranties?

I'm pretty sure that I know the answer. You make money. Otherwise, there wouldn't be an extended warranty program. Ford, or any insurance company, isn't in the business to offer money losing programs.

                        There's nothing wrong with that.

                        It's just business.

Re: Are extended Warranty's worth expence?

Yes Jerry, you are correct. However, it all comes down to numbers and since I don't own hundreds of cars it makes the decision a little different. What I mean is, if you have a large sample size the decision is easy ... don't buy it. But, if you only have a small number of cars (<5) then you have to decide if you've got one of the many "good" cars that don't need much service or did you happen to get one of the few "bad lemons" that will cost you many times the warranty price.

My personal opinion is to ask the question: "Can I easily afford to fix/replace the item?" Low priced goods? Sure, so skip it. High priced goods like health, house, car? Not me, I'll insure it.

Re: Are extended Warranty's worth expence?

My advice is to get the extended warranty because if these cars are anything like my LS, which they are, you will most likely need it.

My LS has less than 36,000 miles, but since the warranty has expired, I've had to:

                            change belt and sensor..................$450
                            replace heater control valve...............$612

and, as of yesterday, the driver side window decided to come off the track, so I lifted the window out and placed it in the trunk. (Of course, it fell down, on it's own, just prior to one of our local monsoons.)

                            cost.............................................$ 305

Plus, I'm still waiting for the warning light "check parking brake" to come back on, which is another $500-600 repair bill.

As much as I love to drive my LS, this car is a maintenance accident looking for a place to happen.

COPS? Rear suspension? Trans flashing? What's next?

I guess "Quality is Job 1" was a nice talking point, not an achievable goal.

Told one of my friends about my car problems today, and he immediately removed any Ford products from his new car search. Felt good to "got even" just a little bit.
