Thanks to everyone for your help and advice!

Twelve months ago, I would have jumped up and down and agreed with that. Now, I feel a little guilty that I helped out, but I did make my thoughts known early on. Red is a very nice color - four years of production prove its popularity. But single year colors are exclusive and a little bit special. We don't need to go fast to be noticed. We're a bit more refined - whether Desert Sky Blue or Merlot. Still, a person has to follow her (or his) heart. I wish you all well and Happy Birding!
Sealy -- I thought EXACTLY the way you did. Exactly! And, I wanted that Desert Sky Blue so badly when I first was looking for my own bird as I knew the color was extremely retro to the baby blue birds in the 50s. I aslo was very much in love with the Vintage Mint Green but realized finding one would likely hold me back from getting one for a long time! You would NEVER have sold me on the red...EVER.. when I was first in the market.
It is all Handyman's and Sandman's fault! Ron mentioned his friend Dennis was in the market and then there was a red one on Long Island that I volunteered to check out. The minute I saw it -- it took my breath away. I wanted to balance that initial emotional reaction convincing myself that it was because it was nearly new (under 200 miles) -- and not a hair of a scratch on it.
For the following 12 months, I would see red birds here and there and I would find myself staring at them! I realized that I liked that red more than I cared to admit to myself. Finally, someone locally was selling his red one (2002) -- with partial red interior and that feeling came flooding back....... I realized that as much as I love the Desert Sky Blue, my heart belonged to the Torch Red.
Surely, the red is fairly common and in abundance -- but somehow it got under my skin. I am lucky enough to have my first bird -- and the ability and opportunity to get a newer model with a fraction of the miles and in fabulous condition.
In looking back -- I am a red car kinda girl. I had a red VW Beetle, red VW Jetta, red Nissan Maxima and an Orangey/Red Pontiac Solstice over the years. These cars stand out in my mind against some of the other cars I have owned since I started driving -- so in the end the love of red is really not so surprising.
Or -- I can just blame Sealy, Handyman and Sandman and be done with my explanation!!
I understand. Reds Past and Present: Subaru GL, Ford Ranger (on my 3rd), 64 Rambler American, Mazda 3 (gorgeous Velocity Red), 65 Mercedes SL, 88 Mercedes SL, 09 Mercedes CLK, and - - - Thunderbird (Merlot). There is nothing finer than red in all its infinite varieties - especially when you add sparkles to it. But some reds just don't get to me - ended up with a blue BMW because they don't do a decent red. I was dead set on a red Bird with a full accent interior and looked at a number of them. But then I saw the Merlot with Light Sand and it was all over. I think we all go through this.
Side Note: Mini sent me an invite to come look at the new Countryman (big Mini). Really nice car that will probably replace my BMW wagon. And, as a BMW off shoot - - - they have one flat red. More than likely will end up with a blue, again.
I had agreed to buy the 2002 Whisper White at Galloway Ford in Ft Myers.
Only 12,000 miles.
I had inspected it, drove it (for an hour) talked price and agreed.
So we walked inside to write it up..
And there on the Showroom floor was this Merlot. A Metallic Merlot. Lots of Metal Flake.
That was it.
Love at first sight.
Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
So now.................Pictures!

Invoice $38,457 - Sold new 9/15/2003
One of twenty two built like this
She was a good one. Sold 12/30/2014.
Replaced with 2013 Infiniti G37 Coupe.
A lot better car and even more exclusive, but doesn't have the Cachet the Thunderbird had. Adios, mi Amigo.
The first Retro Bird I saw was Thunderbird Blue, and I never even considered any other color or combination. Of course, in May 2002, the choices were much more limited then. Judy has gone through phases. After attending a couple of TBN events, she was smitten with the Torch Red. Then she fell in love with the Merlot. Then she saw the PCR and fell head over heels for it. Now she's infatuated with the Cashmere. I've heard that the changing of a mind is a woman's perogative. Yup.
PK- 2002 Premium Blue/Full Accent/Whisper White Top VIN#16336
Built April 22, 2002
Purchased July 24, 2002
Well....I picked this red bird up yesterday! Took the LIRR to Amtrak to Baltimore. Carmax picked me up at the station.
There are a few paint chips and such on the car and some bad touch up job on the hardtop - but she is a beauty for sure. I had a grin on my face the entire ride back; I could almost feel my cheeks cramping.
I have 5 full days to return it for a refund. There are a few things that I would like to get looked at (mechanically) from a Ford dealer....but nevertheless I am totally smitten!!!
Thank you Sealy for doing some legwork. And of course, thanks to Sandman and Handyman for being my support system!
