Is an automated car wash a good/bad idea for the hardtop?

You may find some leaks you never knew you had, but it shouldn't hurt the finish anymore than the hood or trunk.

If its on the car you should be ok, but don't try carrying it through or rolling it on the storage rack. Only took me once to learn that was a mistake....

I also found when I removed the HT at the end of winter, start of Spring, the soft top had water marks from where I think the pressurized water spray got into the soft top from under the HT seal. At least I think that is where or how those water marks got there. Really don't know.

I wouldn't put mine through ANY car wash. True nothing may go wromg but it could and it's a gamble I would not take

Mike, I usually put a small amount of clay in the groove between the sail & quater panels to prevent that when I install the top.

If you fill up with gas and get a free car wash, don't forget to put your gas cap back on. We had a member from California at Thunder Fever (?) who forgot. He went thru the free car wash with gas door open and no gas cap on. No damage done. He lucked out.

Shame on me! I use the hand held spray wash every time I wash our bird. Still a beauty!

It's not a problem, my car has been through numerous automatic car washes with the hardtop on it. If it's installed properly, you may only get a slight drip in the front corner[s].

Damn! Thanks everybody for your replies. This Forum thing really works. All I've got to do now is learn about this site, about my new Tbird, and how to get from Richmond to Nashville without a police escort, and I'll be good to go (so to speak.)

Just took mine through the hand held one this Morning to knock the dust off.
@ Rusty I'm glad I've seen some of your post before, I laughed the whole time as I was reading the rest of the post. I can just picture that now someone carrying or rolling a top through a automatic car was. I don't suppose you got that on video.

Mine has been through a couple of these over the past 10 years without any problem. I won't take it in one now because of the trunk rack I have on it now.

Is anyone concerned about a carwash causing a problem with your coils or plugs? I think I've read on here about someone going through a carwash and immediately having symptoms of a coil going out. Am I being overly concerned? I just had all 8 replaced, and I don't want to risk having another cops problem.

Guy, shouldn't be a problem. I have washed my engine a few times with a garden hose just like Ford says it should be cleaned, just follow instructions. Never had a problem with cops after 80,000+ miles. Others will say no,no. Just my experience with this.
