I think those are two very fair statements Paul.

Given I am a potential buyer and not a seller, I must say I learned a lesson back in the seventies with the "last convertible that will be built", the El Dorado. With the last few new ones rumored to be selling for $200,000 and collectors locking them up, I thought I could not go wrong in buying a 1972 for lots less. Swayed by those rumors and optomistic thinking I did not do the market research I now know to do. I learned an expensive lesson and, worse of all, I hated the car.

Actual sale prices not ASKING prices is where to start. One uninformed buyer making an above worth purchase does not a market value make. Hype made the daffodil market in Holland once soar and hype makes for blips in car values.
      You triggered an old memory.

In the early 70's, my 64 Galaxie convert was in pretty nasty shape. Rust, paint job going downhill, drab interior, etc.

I wanted an old car for autoshows, and I had my eye on a 57 white/gold DeSoto 2dr hardtop. It was in the back of a used car lot, but the car had been owned by a friend of the family. Along with his 48 yellow Buick convert, the previous owner only took the cars out of the garages on Sundays, Mechanically sound, but needed a windshield and interior work. Took it for a test drive and got quite a few looks.

But, with the end of the convert, or so I thought, I stuck with the 64 Galaxie. Never looked back.

Now we have the answer as to why this came up again. The OP made the required minimum number of posts and now has his up for sale. Just some market research.

The Gold/Whites were Adventurers and can easily go into six figures today.

I was told that only one bank in our area would loan money for the Tbirds since they are older, an impediment for dealer sales.
For years I have used Edmunds.com whether buying or selling. Lately I have found the True Market Private Party values may be a bit understated.

Naw. It is little known the real action was in daffodils and covfefes, the bitcoin of their day.

Then I was wrong. Probably it was yellow/white, but it did have the huge rear window.

On Friday, October 4th, a 2003 WW Thunderbird is being auctioned at Mecum in Dallas, Texas. It is no reserve and the Lot number is F186. It shows 15,765 actual miles. It will be interesting to see what it sells for. The pictures represent the car very well. However there are no pictures without the hardtop installed, so there is no way to ascertain if it needs a new convertible top. It is probably black but could be worn, hard to say.

Cal it looks totally stock. Only thing missing is the small sticker warning of the fan that's under the hood. I'd guess around 15k

White generally brings more than Black or Red so with so few miles I think it will bring closer to $20K with the 10% Buyer's premium. A high bid of $18,000 would get it to $19,800.

For me My P.C.R. is still worth about what I paid for it 7 years ago. In 1972 a super Bird for $4,500 was considered overvalued. My first decent car was a '56 DeSoto and I too wanted a Golden Adventurer.

Reality gave me a poke in the eye when I offered to give my prized PCR to my granddaughter for her first car. She graciously turned me down saying she really rather wait for a Honda Hybrid! So I will keep it, enjoy it, and hope my 11 year old grandson will want it when his turn comes. It will be a true low mileage "classic" by then.
How times change. My Ex had a really nice Honda Civic that she offered to the eligible grandchildren (ones with drivers lic) for free. None of the four wanted anything to do with it. Our oldest son took it to auction and sold it for $2200.
This whole thing just blew my mind. Back in my day, I scraped and saved my nickles to buy my first car. I would have almost given one arm for a car.
A FREE car, not in my wildest dreams. I guess it says something about how entitled our young folks have become. Who's fault is that?
