  • Re: Thunderbird Borla Club Members

I am ready to become a member of the "Thunderbird Borla Club" but first I have to purchase and install a set. If anyone can give me a heads up on the best place to purchase a set for my 2002, I think I can install them myself. Thanks in advance, Simon

Let me inI installed Borlas on my 05 Black on Black Thunderbird about 2 weeks ago (thanks to Julie for helping me get them) The sound is mellow V8, pleasing, and I get a nice little burble on deceleration. At no engine load cruise there's not much more noise than stock. I enjoy the sound so much I've been unwilling to put the top up for the last 2 week - not a clue as to how that sounds! Tom

Well, I went back and forth over the idea last summer. Promised myself a full summer season with the car first before changing anything and now have finally ordered.

I should have the borla exhaust for my '04 on Wednesday according to the tracking number assigned.

thanks again to Julie for the help. After surfing sites and making a few phone calls I can pretty confidently say I couldn't have gotten as good a price on the system myself.

Depending on how satisfied I am, and most importantly what Sue thinks of it......... I may be ordering a second system within a couple of weeks for her car.

Try, as I might, to leave the car alone........I just can't get past the sedate, grocery getter quiet exhaust the car comes with.

I know others have done it already but I'll probably take a few pictures along the way on the install.

If anyone has any lingering questions or anything they'd like to see photographed specifically to help with their own decisions here you've got a few days to tell me what you'd like to see and I'll attempt to get the picture for you as I do the job.....and I'll post 'em here when I'm done.

I expect, if delivered on time as promised, I'll be doing this install on Friday.

          Steve

                            OK!!!

They came last night and I headed into the garage at 9:30AM out and test driving at 11:00AM.

This couldn't be an easier installation.

The borlas fit very well, with the possible exception of a bit of a tight fit around the rear gear carrier..........little strong arming of the pipes on the driver's side fixed that easily enough.

I'm not sure I'm interested in being a rolling advertisement for Borla so I may just get back under the car this weekend to knock out the little metal "nubby" (For lack of a better word) and see if I can't tuck the tips in a bit.

Doing so will hide the Borla Logo on those polished tips (sorry guys my car my choice)...........I'm not a fan of new car dealers putting those little stickers on my car to advertise where I bought my car and this just feels the same.

Over all though this is a good system. Pretty good fit, easy install and of course a very mellow but deep throated sound the car should have had from the factory.

                            I can whole-heartedly endorse it!

(Yes that is my thumb in the 3rd picture's top corner....... I never claimed to be a photographer)

Just one more shot....... of that tight fit around the rear end.

On the driver's side it's so close I was worried it would rattle......test drive revealed nothing though.......still I'm going to try to tuck the whole thing forward an inch or so if I can.

When I do this I will try to post pictures again.

I'd do it today but need to get to get ready for an appointment later today.......ran out of time.

Steve, the Borla's were made specifically to fit the Thunderbird, that little "nubby" you speak of is there for a purpose. The "nubby" stops the pipes from being pushed up too far and prevents the pipes from knocking against the heat shield and causing a very annoying rattle.
Now, let me also add this....I do know of a couple of people who did sand down that "nubby" and shoved the pipes in further and do not hear a rattle, BUT I know of more who sanded it off and then began complaining of a rattle. Those people ended up with an additional expense of having to take their car to an exhaust shop and having that little "nubby" welded back on.
As you mentioned above, it is "your car and your choice", all I suggest is you might want to rethink pushing the pipes in further.
I too do not like advertising on the things I buy and will remove labels whenever possible, BUT you are driving a $40,000 car and the Borla name is pretty impressive and draws a lot of attention. Many people have walked past my car and read the BORLA on the tips and said "WOW, BORLA'S!".
Good luck on whatever choice you make Steve.
