  • Took the plunge - upgraded the stereo!

I upgraded Greta's stereo system today. We went with a double-din JVC KW-NT1 nav unit. I've been itching to do it since I saw Roger's (VintageMerlot) system back at Pappasito's in Atlanta a few months back. I was almost scared to do it, for fear it would look crappy and sound worse (usually my luck), but it is AWESOME! Sound is so much better than the factory unit, and it has all the features I was looking for.

The features include: In-dash nav and dvd, bluetooth, SD card and USB input, and MOST importantly, full support for ipod/iphone 3G.

The nav system seems to be very good. I have not played with it too much, but it is very quick and responsive, has an easy-to-use interface. Seems really easy to program with your favorite locations.

As I said, the sound is great. Much better than the several cheap FM transmitters and FM modulator I've used off and on; even better than the factory unit. The installer from Sound Depot said I really need to install new rear speakers (I had already noticed that one of them was sounding like it was cracked at higher frequencies), so I am doing that on Tuesday. They recommended a pair of Bostons for a hundred bucks. Anyone have any personal experience with those?

The installer from Sound Depot was great, very professional, and told me exactly what I needed - and DIDN'T need. I was about to buy an amp as well, but he advised against it. Said the unit was pretty good by itself, and likely did not need one.

It looks very nice, and has the "factory look" to it. The faceplate (the Lincoln LS one that several folks on the Nest have bought) looks and fits great. It's not EXACTLY the same shade of black as the rest of the console, nor is the faceplate ring for the unit itself, but it looks fine to me. I don't think I will bother to have it painted to an exact match, as others here have done.

Total price for the unit, wiring harness, steering wheel control adapter, faceplate, and installation labor was $1227, including a $50 tip for the installer. Took about 45 minutes total to install it. It was kind of an "impulse buy", since I had not planned on doing this till the end of summer or fall. But, it looked and felt right, so, what the heck?! And most importantly, Barbara was with me, so it was officially "blessed" by the Chief Banker and Finance Minister (the WIFE)! Course, now I owe her BIG TIME!

        Here's a couple of pictures:

The first one shows what the ipod (in my case iphone) control screen looks like for an album, and the second is a shot of the GPS display. It looks a bit dirty around the edges because I had not wiped down the fingerprints, etc, from around the faceplate after the install.

          Dang...that is sweeeeet!
How do you update the maps on the GPS? Can you make custom routes?

What software does the GPS use?
          I like a lot.

Sound Depot sold me the unit for $888, and it was not a store return or refurb or anything like that. I did some quick searches on some pricing and customer reviews on the Internet while I was still in the store (from my iphone) and saw that the going price was averaging around $950-1100, depending on the seller. Crutchfield's had it for $999, and, of course, they said it did not fit the tbird (they lead you to believe that not much fits the retro birds, though).

I almost went with a Pioneer that was a bit less, but it would have been a little bit more painful to install (so the installers said, anyway), because of a speed sensor that the Pioneer GPS had to connect to, which was up on the top back of the transmission. This one does not require that, apparently, as it measures its speed by triangulation with the satellites.

I am very happy with the quality of sound and feature set for the price. The remainder of the $1,227 was the hardware and labor for the installation. I think I got a good deal, as I, too, originally thought I'd spend about $2000 on it.

Ya know, I don't really know. It updates from downloads to an SD card, I think, but the sales guy also said something about updating dynamically over the receiver. Never heard of one doing that, but, then, I don't know a lot about GPS units...yet. I'll do a little research and let you know. I do know that the whole unit is running a lite version of Windows CE called Windows Automotive. Hope that does not mean I have to reboot my car every few hundred miles!!

One more thing about it I forgot to mention: cables. I hate to see cables all over the place, and I'm actually pleased with what they did for the bluetooth mike cable and the GPS cable. They routed the mike cable somehow up around to the overhead lights betwen the visors, and it is pretty well hidden behind them. The GPS antenna is actually routed under across the dash and pokes out just a bit under the far passenger corner part of the dash where the windshield meets the car. You wouldn't really notice it unless you were looking for it.
The cable you see above in the picture is the normal ipod USB cable (that comes with the ipod) plugged into the USB slot. There's no special cable or adapter required for the ipod, and I can easily unplug it and stow it when I'm not using it.

Ooooh, oooooh, oooooh. I just gotta see this installation. Bobby and Barbara, hope I can catch up with you guys in the very near future! I've pretty much got an open house (garden) going today (hint, hint - drop in).

I just instgalled the new Eclipse AVN 726E. Bought it for $875 and $120 installation. The GPS antenna is hidden in the center A/C vent and the Sirius antenna is in the center if the dash betweeen the windshield and tehe light sensor. It didn't work well hidden with the GPS so I moved it there. The mic is up by the visor between it and the center lights.

The unit sounds great and will also play DVD's. Everything is touch screen. The only complaint is using the bluetooth mic while driving with the top down at highway speeds. It needs a windsock which I have to find.
