  • Desert Sky Blue. Hardtop color?

As I have posted numerous times, I am in the market for a hardtop for my Bluebird.

While I love the color of the Desert Sky Blue Thunderbird -- and love the sleek look of the hardtop in that same color, my favorite look for the most part is the white hardtop as it gives the car a very retro feel. Conversely, the Desert Sky Blue top makes the car appear sleek and modern (at least to me) and less retro.

In any case, the availability of any hardtop is limited -- and I am not sure I want to paint any hardtop I get (I have a feeling I may be one of those folks that will look to buy several hardtops in other colors!!!).

My question is this: what color hardtop DO YOU like on a Desert Sky Blue Thunderbird?

Thank you for your opinions! And, Merry Christmas!

DEFINTELY WHITE! BUT I ALSO AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT WILL HAVE SEVERAL TOPS TO CHANGE UP THE LOOK. RIGHT NOW I HAVE A RED TOP ON MY BLACK BIRD BUT I ALSO HAVE THE EVENING BLACK TOP. I CAN SEE NO REASON WHY I WONT HAVE 1 MORE TOP BEING WHITE OR SATIN. LOL GOOD LUCK ND ENJOY YOUR BIRD THE WAY YOU LIKE IT.. FROM AL IN STATEN ISLAND!

Whisper Or Performance White Are The Only 2 Colors I Would Consider on a DSB.

I HAVE A PERFORMANCE WHITE TOP THAT I HAVE TRIED ON THE DSB. HOLD OUT FOR A DSB TOP, IT LOOKS MUCH BETTER ON THE CAR.

As a DSB owner myself, I like black.
I know a number of people will disagree with me here but I have had 1 hard top painted and have a quote from a different body shop on getting another one repainted - both were $1,100.00 and you’ll need to buy the trim strip that goes around the top.

I think a saphire blue would look great!

Performance White first, Whisper White might look really good with the pearl coat in it. Then DSB third. Personally I like the 2 toned look. Merry Christmas...

I need to understand better. Are you saying it cost you $1100 for each of the tops -- or, are you saying it cost that much to paint each of them?

Are you talking about the trim piece that TC makes to protect the bird?

A good deal to buy a hardtop is $1000 to $1200. To repaint it a good deal is
$500. That is taking the porthole and back window out of the car repainting it and all edges and reassembly. White definitely is a good color for the blue you memtioned but also I think Black would give it a very special and outstanding look also. Lou

I would go with the White top only if you install or have WW tires, then you,ve really got the fifties look. Painting a top could be very costly to be done right. I bought an MSG top thinking I would have it painted black, but once I got it on the car I decided to leave it alone. I can't think of any trim peace on the top that can't be repainted? Leroy

I love the white roofs - had mine painted Whisper White to go with the TBird blue body - my definition of a classic retro colour-scheme - both colours have a pastel look which worked wonders for me. You have to be sure if you go the painted route, that the body shop will take the time and care in the job. For DSB, I would think either white colour would work, maybe check the TBN Gallery to look at the various combos.

Bottom line - enjoy your search and you will reap the rewards !!

                            Leroy

The prices I quoted above are exactly what I paid to buy a DSB top and have it repainted Tbird blue to match my interrior and headrests and visors, and believe me it is a very quality job. Now if you consider $500 to repaint as being expensive than yes it is
expensive but I do not believe that to be the case. I know what you are talking about
though, depending on the area of the country and the place you take it, that price could be double $500, but that is the challenge to find a quality job at a reasonable price. Lou

Thanks so much for everyone's input. You will NEVER believe this.

                              NEVER.

Guess what I got for Christmas?

YUP! A white hardtop! My husband found one -- for a very good price. It needed touch-up work, a paint job and the molding around the front (that was a bit pricey). The bodyshop that did my other work on the car took the top apart, repaired the small dings, painted the top and installed the moldings.
I had NO idea! My car was sitting under a car cover because of the nasty weather -- and tonight while I washed dishes, my husband took the top off of the car and asked me to come outside! I had NO idea!
Okay! So I love, love, love the white top -- but indeed, I feel the need for another in different color.
                              My husband rocks!
